A man was found guilty in Whatcom County for assault and eluding police and now faces a charge of robbery in Richmond Provincial Court.

A man is facing one charge in Richmond Provincial Court for allegedly hijacking a truck in December and driving it across the border.

Shawn Douglas Bergstrom faces one count of robbery after he allegedly stole a black pickup truck in Richmond on Dec. 12, 2024, and drove it across the border. He was eventually stopped in Whatcom County.

Bergstrom pleaded guilty to two counts in Whatcom County Superior Court and was sentenced to eight months for second-degree assault and 90 days for attempting to elude a police vehicle.

The sentence was handed down by Judge Jennifer Slattery on June 9.

On June 10, Bergstrom was turned over to Richmond RCMP by U.S. authorities.

“With the support of our U.S. partners, we were able to bring this high-profile case to a safe and successful resolution,” said Richmond RCMP Chief Supt. Dave Chauhan in a media release.

“We appreciate the coordinated efforts of all law enforcement agencies in both Canada and the United States whose efforts resulted in the arrest and subsequent charge of the man."

On Dec. 12, Richmond RCMP responded to a robbery in progress. A complainant alleged a man had approached him, produced a knife and asked for his keys to his 2007 Toyota Tacoma.

Bergstrom allegedly took off southbound along Highway 99 and then jumped the border.

He was chased by U.S. border officers and state troopers and was finally stopped in Skagit County.

Bergstrom appeared in Richmond Provincial Court on June 11, and he is being held in custody for a bail hearing scheduled for June 26.
