Ah, summer. The perfect time for rest, relaxation – and surprise fitness tests.
Instead of sitting by the beach with a pina colada in hand, the Quest Kermodes soccer team was treated to a spur of the moment 2.2-kilometre run that had about 150 metres of elevation gain.
Jean-Francois Plouffe, Quest University’s athletic director, had his athletes driven down to the Squamish Valley Golf and Country Club, where the soccer players were forced to run up to the administration building at Quest.
“I would say that 90 per cent of athletes exceeded expectations,” he said.
It was his hope that everyone would be done in 14 minutes.
However, 75 per cent of the runners managed to finish the course in 12 minutes.
The best athletes made it in just under nine minutes.
But while the run was good, the highlight for Plouffe was watching the athletes afterwards cheer each other on.
The team also had dinner together following the test, during which Plouffe said the excitement for the upcoming season was noticeable.
“They were so stoked,” he said. “They were charged up.”
Plouffe said Quest is excited to be holding the provincial soccer championships in October.
He also added that the team is looking for sponsorship.
