Local girls take on junior nationals for freestyle skiing
Five Squamish athletes are getting ready to take on the junior nationals for freestyle skiing on Friday. Freestyle BC, an association of provincial ski clubs, will be sending local girls to participate in the U16 and U14 divisions in Le Relais, Quebec. Ava Dunham will be representing Squamish in the U16 category. In the U14 division, Cassidy Butterworth and Lynnette Conn will be representing the town along with best-friend duo Chase Capicik and Malica Malherbe, who are the two youngest 12-year-olds in the field.
All four of the U14 girls are from Don Ross Secondary. The five girls have all skied under the Whistler Blackcomb Freestyle Development program under Bradley, a former two-time Olympic freestyle skier. They’ve also all gone through the Slayers Ski Camp, which is made up of a majority of Squamish kids. After they’re done tackling the slopes, the girls will be tackling different challenges, such as a bowl of poutine — the final day of the trip will be set aside for exploring Quebec City.
