A basketball tournament for Indigenous players is receiving some warm words.
Capilano Universitys manager of athletics says the attendance for the Junior All-Native Tournament was exceptionally good this year, according to the schools newspaper.
Its the most that Ive ever seen in this facility and Ive been here a while now, Capilano Universitys manager of athletics and recreation Milt Williams told The Capilano Courier.
The basketball tournament had a number of high-profile attendees.
Indigenous elders, Advanced Education Minister Melanie Mark, and Capilano University VP Toran Savjord were among those who spoke at the event, the paper reported.
Some of those kids have never been out of their communities, and they came into a venue like this and their eyes were just wide open and they were amazed as to what the possibilities are, Williams The Courier.
The organizer said that this is the best that its ever been.
More than 80 basketball teams participated in the Junior All-Native Tournament last month at gyms across the Lower Mainland, including several on the North Shore.
